It is not easy to draw a clear distinction between magic and witchcraft. Both are concerned with the producing of effects beyond the natural powers of man by agencies other than the Divine (cf. OCCULT ART, OCCULTISM). But in witchcraft, as commonly understood, there is involved the idea of a diabolical pact or at least an appeal to the intervention of the spirits of evil. In such cases this supern atural aid is usually invoked either to compass the death of some obnoxious person, or to awaken the passion of love in those who are the objects of desire, or to call up the dead, or to bring calamity or impotence upon enemies, rivals, and fancied oppressors. This is not an exhaustive enumeration, but these represent some of the principal purposes that witchcraft has been made to serve at nearly all periods of the world's history. In the traditional belief, not only of the dark ages, but of post-Reformation times, the witches or wizards addicted to such practices entered into a compact with Satan, adjured Christ and the Sacraments, observed "the witches' sabbath" — performing infernal rites which often took the shape of a parody of the Mass or the offices of the Church — paid Divine honour to the Prince of Darkness, and in return received from him preternatural powers, such as those of riding through the air on a broomstick, assuming different shapes at will, and tormenting their chosen victims, while an imp or "familiar spirit" was placed at their disposal, able and willing to perform any service that might be needed to further their nefarious purposes. The belief in witchcraft and its practice seem to have existed among all primitive peoples. Both in ancient Egypt and in Babylonia it played a conspicuous part, as existing records plainly show. It will be sufficient to quote a short section from the recently recovered Code of Hammurabi (about 2000 B.C.). It is there prescribed, If a man has laid a charge of witchcraft and has not justified it, he upon whom the witchcraft is laid shall go to the holy river; he shall plunge into the holy river and if the holy river overcome him, he who accused him shall take to himself his house.
Make A Witches Broom Cut a round toothpick or a bamboo skewer to the length you want and round off the ends. Make loops of embroidery thread the length you want for your broom fronds by wrapping thread around two fingers. Dip one end of the broom in pva glue and glue a line of one end of the loops around the broom base. Hint, if the witch will lean on the broom, leave the end of the w ood just a bit shorter than the broom fronds that will cover it and glue the thread higher up the broom handle. Set aside to dry. (only one end of the loops will be glued to the handle). Use your fingers to coat a darker thread with glue, and wrap it around the handle over the glued loops to bind them in place. Finish the broom by cutting evenly across the loose looped end of the threads and teasing the threads apart. Make a Miniature Witch's Hat The same instructions apply to all sizes. Fabric hats may need to be stiffened with interfacing. Cut two circular hat brims from the printable sheet or your chosen fabric Cut out the white centers. Cut out the central cone for the hat. Fold a 1/8 inch tab on one straight side of the cone. Glue the remaining straight edge to the folded tab to form a peaked cone. Leave to dry. Insert the cone up through a hat brim, with the brim right side facing up. Fit the cone tight inside the brim. Use sharp scissors to cut the base of the cone below the hat brim forming tabs. Do not cut above the hat brim. Use tweezers to fold the tabs up against the underside of the hat brim as shown and glue them in place Leave to dry. Position the lower brim over the tabs and upper brim, lining up the holes in the center of the hat. Glue the lower brim to the upper brim, covering the tabs (use fusable interfacing with fabric) Set aside to dry. Trim the brim edges so that the upper and lower brim match, and run a black marker around the brim to color any white edges

Pagan and Wiccan Music Music has a place in ritual and in our lives. The rhythm moves us, the sounds uplift us, and the comination stirs our souls. It can create a different ambiance for a ritual, or help soothe your nerves so you can meditate. Or you can also just listen to it in your car or on a walk for a little magickal touch during mundane activities! This was a list posted to me by MorningDove on the College Wicca Forum. These are her words and descriptions on each link. I'm frankly not an expert when it comes to knowing Pagan music...I have Godsmack CD's, and From The Goddess/O Great Spirit by Robert Gass and On Wings of Song, and my usual meditation music (if any) is usually Neptune: The Mystic by Holst. Otherwise, this page never would have been made without her suggestions. I appreciate Dove and her expertise on the subject...and will also be looking into these groups!

PENTAGRAM-WITCH’S STAR The Pentagram is usually made out of brass, gold, silver, wood, wax, or clay with a flat surface having the Pentagram (the five pointed star) and other related magical symbols embossed on it. The Pentagram, the five pointed star, was taken from Ceremonial Magic. In this ancient art, it was used for protection or a tool used to evoke spirit. In the Craft it represents the e lement of Earth and generally is used to place amulets, charms or other items to be consecrated and charged. Some Witches buy a piece of round wood and using a burning tool to inscribe the Pentagram and other various items on it like runes and symbols. Some Witches also add gem stones and crystals for more empowerment. Some Witches call the Pentagram the Witch’s Star and it helps us to remember our tools of magick: the blade of penetrating mind (to know); the flame (the staff) of our will and actions (to will), the cup of our emotions (to dare) the pentacle of our earthy bodies (to keep silent), the infinity sign of spirit guide. The star is in itself a medicine wheel and can be used in any number of ways. It can spin, so that emphasis can be placed in any particular arm or arms of the star as appropriate. Point the five arm upward to raise energy, for example, or the earth arm downward for grounding. To bless yourself with the Witche’s Star when you feel the need to or to do each and every morning goes as follows: Starting at third-eye with finger, then go to left hip, then to the right shoulder, then to left shoulder, to right hip and then back to third eye again. You have drawn the Witche’s Star on your person. Christians make the sign of the cross when they enter their temples. Since the Goddess’ temple is everywhere and in everything, we need no temple to bless ourselves. A simple blessing something during the day will invoke the Goddess into us and helps us feel more connected and sacred.

Candle magic is one of the simplest forms of spell casting. Considered sympathetic magic, it's a method which doesn’t require a lot of fancy ritual or expensive ceremonial artifacts. In other words, anyone with a candle can cast a spell. After all, remember when you were a child and you made a wish before you blew out the candles on your cake? Same theory, only now instead of just hoping, you're declaring your intent (and by now you've probably stopped hoping for a pony). If you think about it, the birthday-candle ritual is based on three key magical principles: Decide on a goal Visualize the end result Focus your intent, or will, to manifest that result What Sort of Candle Should I Use? Most practitioners of Wicca will tell you that, much like a few other aspects of life, size really isn't important. In fact, really big candles may be counterproductive -- a candle that takes too long to burn down can be highly distracting to someone working a spell that instructs you to wait until the candle burns out on its own. Typically, a short taper candle or a votive candle work the best. In some cases, a spell might call for a specific type of candle, such as a seven-day candle or a figure candle, which may represent a particular person. One of the most popular candles, believe it or not, is in fact the little menorah candles which are sold by the box in the kosher section of the grocery store. They're about 4" long, white, unscented, and thin -- perfect for spell work. You should always use a brand new candle for spell work -- in other words, virgin materials. Don't use the candles that you burned at the dinner table or in the bathroom yesterday for spell work. In some magical traditions, once a candle is burned it picks up vibrations from things around it -- in other words, a used candle is already tainted by vibrations, and so will lead to a negative or ineffective magical outcome. When it comes to colors, you may wish to have a variety on hand for different magical purposes. Typically, color correspondences for candle magic are as follows: Red: Courage and health, sexual love and lust Pink: Friendship, sweet love Orange: Attraction and encouragement Gold: Financial gain, business endeavors, solar connections Yellow: Persuasion and protection Green: Financial gain, abundance, fertility Light Blue: Health, patience and understanding Dark Blue: Depression and vulnerability Purple: Ambition and power Brown: Earth-related or animal-related workings Black: Negativity and banishment White: Purity and truth* Silver: Reflection, intuition, lunar connections * Note that in many Pagan traditions, it is acceptable to use a white candle in place of any other color. Using Your Candle in Ritual After you've selected a candle, you'll want to oil it or dress it before burning. This is a method by which you'll establish a psychic link between you and the candle itself. In other words, you're charging the candle with your own energy and personal vibrations, and projecting your intent into the wax before you burn it. To dress a candle, you'll need a natural oil -- many practitioners like grapeseed because it has no smell. Another option is to use special candle magic oils from one of the Wiccan supply stores. Begin at the top of the candle, and rub the oil downward to the middle. Then, begin at the base of the candle and rub the oil up towards the middle, ending where the first coating of oil left off. In some traditions of Wicca, the anointing is done just the opposite way -- start in the middle and work your way towards the two ends. If your working calls for herbs to be used as well, roll the oiled candle in the powdered herbs until it is coated all the way around. The most basic form of candle magic uses a piece of colored paper that matches the intent of your candle. Decide what your goal is, and write it on the piece of paper -- just for an example, let's say we're going to do a money working. Write down your intent -- something like I will become financially prosperous. In some traditions, you would write your intent in a magical alphabet, such as Theban or Enochian. Because this is a money-oriented working, we would select either a gold or green piece of paper, and a candle of the same color. As you write down your goal, visualize yourself achieving that goal. Think about the different ways in which your goal might manifest -- could you be getting a raise at work? Perhaps someone who owed you money will arrive out of the blue to repay their debt. Once you've written down your goal, fold the paper, concentrating on your intent the whole time. Some people like to say a small incantation as they do this -- if you're one of those people, this is a good place to do it. It doesn't have to be anything fancy. You can use something as simple as: Extra money come my way, I could use a little cash today. Extra money come to me, As I will, so it shall be. Place one corned of the folded paper into the candle's flame and allow it to catch fire. Hold the paper as long as possible (without burning your fingers) and then place it in a fire-safe bowl or cauldron to burn the rest of the way on its own. Allow the candle to burn out completely. When the candle has burned out completely, dispose of it, rather than saving it to use again for another working. Usually there's not much left of a candle except a stub of wax, and you can either bury it outdoors or dispose of it in whatever manner you choose.
